Lower Shelf, a quiet cluster of dwellings, carries the cool, damp breath of the Pennine moors. It lies 3.7 km north-east of Halifax (from Halifax: bearing 53°T, OS grid SE 122 273), and is situated north-north-east of Lumbrook village. The scattered stone farmsteads, their roofs often the colour of heather after a rain, seem to hunker against the broad, sweeping skies. A thin ribbon of road connects Lower Shelf to the wider world, a world that often feels distant here, as if the very air has a different density. The light, when it breaks through the frequent cloud cover, can be astonishingly clear, illuminating the rough-hewn walls and the hardy sheep that dot the surrounding slopes. Even the silence has a texture, broken only by the bleating of livestock or the distant drone of traffic, a sound that seems to travel a long way across the open land.
