About Danby Head

Danby Head rests where the Cleveland Hills begin their slow, green heave towards the North Sea. It lies 14.6 km south-south-east of Guisborough (from Guisborough: bearing 150°T, OS grid NZ 688 034), and is situated south-east of Westerdale village. The air here carries the scent of heather and damp earth, a constant reminder of the moors that cradle this small settlement. Sheep graze on slopes that fall away like rumpled blankets, their bleating a lonely song carried on the wind. The houses of Danby Head, built of warm, local stone, seem to have grown from the very land, their roofs a muted patchwork against the vast, ever-changing sky. A quietude pervades, punctuated only by the murmur of the River Esk as it winds its way through the adjacent valleys.
