About Whaddon

Whaddon occupies a sturdy rise of land where the flat plains of Buckinghamshire begin to tilt toward the horizon. It lies 3.9 miles west of Bletchley (from Bletchley: bearing 277°T, OS grid SP 805 341), and is situated east of Nash village. Church Hill rises a mere two hundred metres south of the parish church, a prominence that catches the low, pale light of winter afternoons and holds it against the darkening fields. High upon this slope, a bowl barrow remains as a silent, earthen anchor to the distant past. Beyond the immediate crest, the land drops away toward the damp, verdant hollows of the Oxley Mead SSSI, where the meadow grass leans heavily in the prevailing breeze. Whaddon maintains a quiet gravity, its limestone cottages absorbing the seasonal shifts in temperature and tone. The local architecture possesses a weathered resilience, as if the buildings themselves have grown accustomed to the long, slow passage of the clouds. These surroundings provide a stark, open clarity that defines the character of the soil and the people who walk it.
