Ruatapu breathes a quiet, coastal air, a scattering of dwellings and farms settled a couple of kilometres from the restless edge of the Tasman Sea, where the land slopes gently towards the distant murmur of Daylight Bight. It lies 139.6 km north-north-west of Ashburton (from Ashburton: bearing 331°T), and is situated 11.4 km south-south-west of Hokitika. The landscape here is a study in muted greens and greys, a place where the rich soil, nourished by frequent rains, supports a patchwork of pasture and stands of native bush, the air often carrying the damp, earthy scent of Mikonui Forest to the north-east. Rolling country, softened by time and weather, gives way to the undulating terrain that hints at the more dramatic Ford Ridge, seventeen kilometres inland, and the land's proximity to water is evident in the occasional glint of the Hokitika River's braided channels, seven kilometres to the south, and the broad expanse of Lake Mahinapua, a similar distance away, its still waters reflecting the vast, often brooding West Coast sky.
