TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Reefton.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Reefton, West Coast

Reefton is a locality in the West Coast Region of New Zealand. It is a small community with a population of 927. It sits at an elevation of around 199 m above sea level. It lies approximately 67 km north-east of Greymouth, the regional capital. Reefton is located at 42.1167°S, 171.8667°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a rural settlement.

Reefton rests in a valley cradled by rolling, bush-clad hills, a landscape shaped by the persistent flow of the Inangahua River, which threads its way a mere three kilometres from the town. It lies 144.2 km south-west of Stoke (from Stoke: bearing 231°T), and is situated 37.4 km north-east of Ahaura. The air here often carries the damp, earthy scent of native bush, a constant reminder of the dense forests that cloak the surrounding terrain, stretching towards the distant Victoria Range. Sunlight, when it breaks through, often has a soft, diffused quality, filtering through the canopy to paint dappled patterns on the forest floor, and the evenings can bring a crispness that hints at the higher country.

This inland settlement, far from any coast, owes its existence to the rich veins of gold that once pulsed beneath its earth, drawing a determined populace in the late 19th century. While the fever of the gold rush has long since cooled, the echoes of that industrious past remain, woven into the character of Reefton and its enduring local economy, which now leans on forestry and the quiet hum of agricultural pursuits in the surrounding farmlands. Travellers often find their way here seeking the simpler pleasures of the outdoors, perhaps venturing onto Quigleys Track, a pathway that winds through the very bush that defines the region's distinct, untamed beauty.

About This Reefton Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Reefton, West Coast, New Zealand at coordinates -42.11667, 171.86667. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Reefton.

Reefton sits within the West Coast Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Reefton is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
