Matainui is a locality in the West Coast Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 71 m above sea level. It lies approximately 112 km south-west of Greymouth, the regional capital. Matainui is located at 43.2667°S, 170.3667°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Matainui rests in a broad, fertile valley, a patchwork of green farmland stretching towards the distant, muted grey of the Price Range. It lies 130.4 km west-north-west of Ashburton (from Ashburton: bearing 302°T), and is situated 44.1 km east-north-east of Waikowhai. The air here carries a damp, earthy scent, a constant reminder of the rich soil that defines the landscape and the frequent, soft rains that nourish it.
