Lyell is a locality in the West Coast Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 301 m above sea level. It lies approximately 102 km north-east of Greymouth, the regional capital. Lyell is located at 41.8000°S, 172.0500°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Lyell lies in a valley, cradled by the rolling slopes of Deepdale Ridge to the east, its flanks a mosaic of regenerating native bush and more settled farmland. It lies 112.2 km west-south-west of Stoke (from Stoke: bearing 241°T), and is situated 23.5 km west of Murchison.
