Greenstone is a locality in the West Coast Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 72 m above sea level. It lies approximately 19 km south-southeast of Greymouth, the regional capital. Greenstone is located at 42.6333°S, 171.2667°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Greenstone lies in a broad, shallow valley where the land begins to soften its rugged West Coast character. It lies 139.2 km north-west of Rolleston (from Rolleston: bearing 319°T), and is situated 19.3 km south-south-east of Greymouth. Rolling hills, cloaked in the dense, dark green of native bush, rise on either side, their slopes often slick with recent rain. Patches of pasture, a vibrant emerald after a shower, break the uniformity of the forest, giving way to the occasional weathered fence line. The air here carries a perpetual dampness, a subtle scent of decaying leaves and the distant tang of the sea, even though the open coastline is a good eleven kilometres away. The Little Hohonu River, a ribbon of grey water, meanders through the valley floor, its banks often lined with reeds and smooth, water-worn stones.

The history of Greenstone is intrinsically linked to the land's bounty and the relentless spirit of its early settlers. For generations, the economy revolved around the careful cultivation of the rich soil and the hardy sheep that grazed its hillsides, their wool a vital export.
