It lies approximately 2 km west-southwest of Greymouth, the regional capital. Blaketown is located at 42.4538°S, 171.1956°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a rural settlement.

Blaketown sits in a broad basin, cradled by the gentle undulations of rolling farmland that climb towards the distant, rugged silhouette of the Twelve Apostles Range. It lies 158.4 km north-west of Rolleston (from Rolleston: bearing 322°T), and is situated 1.5 km north-north-west of Greymouth.
