Blackwater is a locality in the West Coast Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 186 m above sea level. It lies approximately 52 km east-northeast of Greymouth, the regional capital. Blackwater is located at 42.2500°S, 171.7667°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Blackwater lies in a broad valley, its contours softened by distance, where rolling hills, cloaked in a mosaic of native bush and farmland, recede towards the hazy, distant presence of Lochnagar Ridge. It lies 156.5 km north-north-west of Rolleston (from Rolleston: bearing 341°T), and is situated 17.0 km south-south-west of Reefton. The air here carries a distinct coolness, even on brighter days, a testament to its inland position, far from any sea-scented breeze.
