TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Rainbow Point.
Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.
The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.
Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

Rainbow Point is a locality in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 374 m above sea level. It lies approximately 125 km south-east of Hamilton, the regional capital. Rainbow Point is located at 38.7182°S, 176.0793°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).
Rainbow Point rests against the broad, pale sweep of Lake Taupo's edge, its character shaped by the immense, ancient caldera that cradles the water. It lies 3.9 km south of Taupo (from Taupo: bearing 185°T), and is situated 4.5 km east-south-east of Acacia Bay. The land here rolls in gentle swells, a tapestry of emerald pastures interspersed with the darker, more rugged textures of native bush clinging to the slopes. Away from the lake’s immediate embrace, the land rises towards the distant, muted shapes of the Ouaha Hills, their contours softened by distance and the prevailing haze of the volcanic plateau. The air often carries a clean, crisp scent, a testament to the inland location, and in the late afternoon, the light can fall in golden shafts, illuminating the fine dust motes dancing above the dry grasses.
Historically, Rainbow Point has been intrinsically linked to the lifeblood of the Waikato River, a mere seven kilometres away, and the fertile lands it has nourished for generations. The local economy, for a long time, was anchored by dairy farming, the rich volcanic soil yielding abundant pasture for herds that graze the undulating countryside. More recently, the allure of Lake Taupo has drawn in tourism, with visitors drawn to the lake's expanse and the nearby spectacle of Huka Falls, a churning, powerful cascade that exemplifies the region's raw, elemental forces. The Tauhara Mountain Walking Track offers a different perspective, a chance to ascend and survey the vast, inland landscape, a panorama that speaks of both geological drama and the quiet persistence of life.

It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.
My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.
