TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Spotswood.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Spotswood, Taranaki

Spotswood is a locality in the Taranaki Region of New Zealand. It has a population of approximately 4,060. It sits at an elevation of around 64 m above sea level. It lies approximately 4 km west-southwest of New Plymouth, the regional capital. Spotswood is located at 39.0722°S, 174.0344°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a small urban area.

Spotswood lies cradled by the gentle undulations of Taranaki's landscape, a place where the air, even two kilometres from the coast, carries a faint tang of salt from Port Taranaki. It lies 4.3 km west of New Plymouth (from New Plymouth: bearing 262°T), and is situated 10.9 km west-south-west of Bell Block. The land here is a patchwork of fertile fields, the deep greens of pasture and the lighter hues of cultivation, all sloping towards the distant, watchful presence of the Kaitake Range. The sky often stretches in vast, unimpeachable blues, sometimes softened by a milky haze that hints at the sea's proximity, and the light at dusk can paint the rolling hills in shades of rose and amber, a fleeting beauty that stills the day's industry.

Historically, Spotswood has been a quiet contributor to the region’s prosperity, its economy intrinsically linked to the rich dairy farming that defines much of Taranaki. The land has yielded its bounty for generations, supporting families and fuelling the nation's appetite for butter and cheese. While Port Taranaki has grown into a vital hub for shipping, Spotswood itself retains a more grounded character, a place where the rhythm of the seasons dictates the pace of life, and the quiet hum of agricultural activity is the prevailing sound, occasionally punctuated by the distant cry of gulls carried on the sea breeze.
