It lies approximately 17 km north-northeast of Invercargill, the regional capital. Tussock Creek is located at 46.2500°S, 168.4167°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Tussock Creek lies in a broad, gently undulating landscape, where the land swells and recedes in a series of low hills that cradle the earth. It lies 17.4 km north-north-east of Invercargill (from Invercargill: bearing 17°T), and is situated 12.8 km south-south-east of Winton. The air here carries a crisp, clean scent, a testament to the inland plains and the distant, yet ever-present, presence of native bush, particularly Hokonui Forest to the north-east.
