Maia rests in a shallow basin, a scattering of houses and fields cupped by the rolling shoulders of the Otago landscape. It lies 4.0 km east-north-east of Dunedin (from Dunedin: bearing 64°T), and is situated 1.6 km south-east of North East Valley. The air here carries a faint, briny tang, a whisper from Raynbirds Bay, some four kilometres to the east, where the restless Pacific breathes against the shore.
