TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Waipu.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Waipu, Northland

Waipu is a locality in the Northland Region of New Zealand. It has a population of approximately 1,410. It sits at an elevation of around 9 m above sea level. It lies approximately 30 km south-southeast of Whangarei, the regional capital. Waipu is located at 35.9833°S, 174.4500°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a small urban area.

Waipu rests in a gentle embrace of rolling green hills, a landscape softened by the passage of time and the persistent whisper of the sea. It lies 30.2 km south-south-east of Whangarei (from Whangarei: bearing 158°T), and is situated 8.4 km south of Ruakaka. The land here is a tapestry of pasture, crisscrossed by the meandering Ahuroa River as it makes its way toward the coast, its banks often fringed with native bush that offers a cool, verdant contrast to the sun-drenched fields. The air itself carries a subtle briny tang, a constant reminder of Waipu Cove, a mere seven kilometres distant, and the vast Pacific that lies beyond. This is a place where the sky often stretches in an unbroken expanse of brilliant blue, sometimes broken by the soft, grey bellies of passing clouds, casting fleeting shadows over the undulating terrain.

The spirit of Waipu is deeply intertwined with its history, notably the arrival of Scottish settlers in the mid-19th century, whose legacy can still be felt in the closely-knit community and the enduring spirit of self-reliance. The local economy has long been anchored by dairy farming, with contented cows dotting the emerald pastures, their milk contributing to the region's rich agricultural output. Beyond the farms, the proximity to the coast subtly influences life, offering opportunities for fishing and a connection to the rhythm of the tides. It is this blend of pastoral tranquility and coastal influence, woven with the threads of hard-won history, that gives Waipu its distinctive and quietly compelling character.

About This Waipu Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Waipu, Northland, New Zealand at coordinates -35.98333, 174.45. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Waipu.

Waipu sits within the Northland Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Waipu is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
