Paparoa lies cradled by a landscape of rolling, verdant hills that slope gently towards the distant shimmer of the Tasman Sea. It lies 41.8 km south of Whangarei (from Whangarei: bearing 191°T), and is situated 12.0 km west of Maungaturoto. The air here carries the scent of damp earth and the faint, briny tang of the coast, a constant reminder of the Matakohe River's nearby presence and the proximity of Aute Bay, a mere three kilometres away.
