Maungakaramea is a locality in the Northland Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 96 m above sea level. It lies approximately 16 km south-west of Whangarei, the regional capital. Maungakaramea is located at 35.8500°S, 174.2167°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Maungakaramea lies in a broad valley, a tapestry of green farmland stitched with darker patches of native bush. It lies 16.3 km south-west of Whangarei (from Whangarei: bearing 216°T), and is situated 14.2 km south-west of Raumanga. Rolling hills, their slopes softened by time and cultivation, rise on either side, their summits often softened by a fine haze that speaks of distance. The land here is generous, yielding to the plough and the grazing animal, its contours sculpted by ancient waterways that now meander through pastures. The air, particularly in the early morning, carries the scent of damp earth and the distant, sweet perfume of flowering gorse, a subtle fragrance that clings to the land.

The economic heart of Maungakaramea has long been its fertile soil, supporting generations of dairy farmers whose white-washed sheds dot the landscape.
