TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Matauri Bay.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Matauri Bay, Northland

Matauri Bay is a locality in the Northland Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 56 m above sea level. It lies approximately 87 km north-northwest of Whangarei, the regional capital. Matauri Bay is located at 35.0333°S, 173.9000°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Matauri Bay lies cradled by a gentle sweep of coastline, where the land softens into rolling hills carpeted with emerald pasture. It lies 86.6 km north-north-west of Whangarei (from Whangarei: bearing 334°T), and is situated 13.0 km north-east of Kaeo. The air here carries the faint, salty tang of the Pacific, a whisper from the nearby Orokaraka Bay, just a kilometre distant. Sunlight, often diffused by a fine mist, glints off the shallow waters of the bay, revealing a mosaic of sand and seabed. Native bush, a dense tapestry of green, clings to the steeper inclines, its shadows deepening as the day wears on, while the distant Omataroa Ridge forms a soft, hazy silhouette against the horizon.

This particular stretch of coast has long been shaped by human endeavour, its economy historically tied to the bounty of the sea and the fertility of its soil. While fishing boats still bob in the sheltered waters, the land is now largely dedicated to grazing, the lowing of cattle a familiar sound. The quiet industriousness of the region is punctuated by the occasional rumble of a tractor, a reminder of the ongoing agricultural lifeblood. Further afield, the Takou River winds its way towards the sea, its presence hinted at by the richer, more verdant growth in the valleys, and though Lake Manuwai lies some distance inland, its waters contribute to the broader hydrological character of the Northland.

About This Matauri Bay Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Matauri Bay, Northland, New Zealand at coordinates -35.03333, 173.9. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Matauri Bay.

Matauri Bay sits within the Northland Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Matauri Bay is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
