TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Rai Valley.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Rai Valley, Marlborough

Rai Valley is a locality in the Marlborough Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 46 m above sea level. It lies approximately 44 km north-west of Blenheim, the regional capital. Rai Valley is located at 41.2333°S, 173.5833°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Rai Valley rests in a broad, sun-drenched basin, a place where the land softens before rising into the forested slopes of the Bryant Range. It lies 25.4 km east of Nelson (from Nelson: bearing 81°T), and is situated 28.7 km east-north-east of Enner Glynn. The land here is a mosaic of green, a patchwork quilt of pasture and the darker, deeper hues of native bush that cling to the hillsides. The air carries the scent of damp earth and growing things, a quiet perfume that is strongest after a rain. In the distance, the land rolls and folds, a series of undulating rises that give way to steeper, tree-clad inclines. The Rai River, a constant, murmuring presence, threads its way through the valley floor, its waters clear and cool, reflecting the wide, often brilliant blue of the sky.

The history of Rai Valley is tied to the rich, dark soil and the bounty it yields. For generations, dairy farming has been the backbone of the local economy, the steady rhythm of milking machines and the lowing of cattle a familiar sound. Forestry also plays a significant role, with stands of pine marching up the hillsides, their straight lines a contrast to the wilder, untamed bush that borders the valley. Travellers passing through might notice the quiet diligence of the people, a practical approach to life shaped by the land and its demands. A short distance away, the Rai Falls offer a refreshing cascade, a natural spectacle that draws visitors seeking a moment of cool respite from the sun.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name.
