TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Waipawa.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

Waipawa is a locality in the Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 138 m above sea level. It lies approximately 56 km south-southwest of Napier, the regional capital. Waipawa is located at 39.9382°S, 176.6002°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Waipawa rests in a broad, fertile valley, its landscape shaped by the gentle meander of the Waipawa River, a ribbon of silver tracing its way across the plains. It lies 39.6 km south-south-west of Hastings (from Hastings: bearing 212°T), and is situated 6.7 km south-south-west of Otane. Rolling hills, clad in a patchwork of emerald farmland and the darker hues of native bush, rise to meet the horizon, their slopes softened by the afternoon sun. To the east, the Raukawa Range forms a distant, undulating boundary, its peaks often softened by a haze that speaks of the inland air. The land here feels solid, grounded, a place where the sky seems to stretch endlessly above the cultivated fields and the occasional stand of poplar trees.

The economic pulse of Waipawa beats with the rhythm of agriculture, primarily sheep and beef farming that has sustained the district for generations. The rich, alluvial soil, enriched by the river's bounty, also supports a thriving horticultural sector, with orchards of apples and kiwifruit dotting the surrounding countryside. History is etched into the very character of Waipawa, a heritage evident in the sturdy, unpretentious architecture of its buildings and the quiet pride of its residents. The nearby Tukituki Reserve offers a peaceful retreat, a place where the natural beauty of the region can be appreciated, a subtle reminder of the enduring connection between the people and the land they inhabit.

About This Waipawa Map Page

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Waipawa.

Waipawa sits within the Hawke's Bay Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Waipawa is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
