Wharua is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 229 m above sea level. It lies approximately 213 km south-west of Christchurch, the regional capital. Wharua is located at 44.7000°S, 170.5167°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Wharua lies in a landscape of broad, sweeping plains that climb gently towards the distant, rugged spine of the Kirkliston Range. It lies 67.4 km west-south-west of Timaru (from Timaru: bearing 240°T), and is situated 4.5 km north-east of Hakataramea. The earth here is a rich, ochre-brown, a testament to the sun-baked resilience of the soil, crisscrossed by the silver threads of irrigation channels that bring life to the dry air.
