TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Styx.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Styx, Canterbury

Styx is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 8 m above sea level. It lies approximately 10 km north-northeast of Christchurch, the regional capital. Styx is located at 43.4463°S, 172.6585°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Styx lies under a wide, often cloud-streaked sky, its landscape shaped by the broad sweep of Canterbury's plains. It lies 9.9 km north-north-east of Christchurch (from Christchurch: bearing 12°T), and is situated 7.7 km south of Kaiapoi. Low, rounded hills, softened by pasture and the occasional cluster of wind-bent trees, form the immediate backdrop, their contours a gentle invitation rather than a formidable barrier. The air here carries a clean, crisp scent, particularly after rain, a fragrance of damp earth and growing things. To the west, the hazy blue line of the Bald Hills hints at distances beyond, while closer at hand, the land is a patchwork of cultivated fields and grazing paddocks, bisected by the languid, grey-green ribbon of the Styx River, its banks often fringed with reeds that rustle with unseen life. The nearby Brooklands Lagoon, a shallow expanse reflecting the sky, adds a touch of watery stillness to the otherwise terrestrial scene.

The history of Styx is deeply intertwined with the fertile land that surrounds it. For generations, the economy has been largely agricultural, a steady rhythm of dairy herds and sheep farming that has shaped both the landscape and the character of its inhabitants. More recently, the proximity to Bottle Lake Forest has brought forestry into play, its dark, serried ranks a contrasting texture against the open fields, and the Waimairi Walkway offers a place for quiet contemplation amidst this working countryside. While not a hub of grand historical monuments, Styx holds a quiet dignity, a place where the legacy of early settlers is evident in the enduring farmsteads and the subtle organisation of the land. The quality of light here, particularly in the late afternoon when the sun dips low, casting long shadows and bathing the fields in a warm, honeyed glow, imbues Styx with a particular, understated beauty.

About This Styx Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Styx, Canterbury, New Zealand at coordinates -43.44627, 172.65849. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Styx.

Styx sits within the Canterbury Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Styx is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
