Selwyn is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 71 m above sea level. It lies approximately 36 km west-southwest of Christchurch, the regional capital. Selwyn is located at 43.6500°S, 172.2167°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Selwyn lies spread across the Canterbury Plains, a landscape of broad horizons and fertile earth. It lies 15.3 km west-south-west of Rolleston (from Rolleston: bearing 241°T), and is situated 14.6 km north-north-west of Leeston. To the north, the land rolls gently before meeting the distant, low-slung line of Homebush Ridge, a subtle curve against the vast sky. The air here carries the dry scent of grasses and the faint, mineral tang of the earth, especially in the late afternoon when the sun slants long and golden. The Irwell River, a modest waterway, threads its way through the district, its banks often lined with willow and tussock, a lifeline for the surrounding paddocks.
