TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Topo shows the official LINZ topographic maps — the Topo250 and Topo50 sheets used for tramping, hunting, hut access and back-country navigation, switching scale automatically as you zoom in. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Pareora.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Pareora, Canterbury

Pareora is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It is a small community with a population of 465. It sits at an elevation of around 13 m above sea level. It lies approximately 157 km south-west of Christchurch, the regional capital. Pareora is located at 44.5000°S, 171.2000°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a rural settlement.

Pareora rests upon a landscape of gentle, sun-bleached plains, where the air carries a faint whisper of salt from the distant Caroline Bay. It lies 12.2 km south-south-west of Timaru (from Timaru: bearing 200°T), and is situated 13.0 km south of Gleniti. The land here is a study in muted ochres and greens, a canvas painted with the broad strokes of agriculture under a vast, ever-changing sky. To the west, the land begins a slow, subtle rise, hinting at the undulating topography that eventually gives way to the more rugged contours of The Hunters Hills. The Pareora River, a vital artery of this region, threads its way through the terrain, its waters reflecting the pale blue of the heavens, its banks often fringed with hardy, wind-swept vegetation.

The economic pulse of Pareora has long been tied to the fertile land and the bounty of the sea, though its direct coastal proximity is measured in kilometres rather than metres. For generations, dairy farming has shaped the character of the district, its verdant pastures a testament to the rich soil and the diligent efforts of its inhabitants. The nearby Pareora River, a constant companion, has not only nourished the land but also played a role in the district's development, its flow a reminder of the enduring connection between the people and the natural world. While the roar of surf is a distant echo, the tangible influence of the coast is felt in the quality of the air and the rhythms of life, a subtle reminder of the broader maritime heritage of the Canterbury region.

About This Pareora Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Pareora, Canterbury, New Zealand at coordinates -44.5, 171.2. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Pareora.

Pareora sits within the Canterbury Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Pareora is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
