Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Lake Tekapo, Canterbury

Lake Tekapo is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It is a small community with a population of 330. It sits at an elevation of around 710 m above sea level. It lies approximately 181 km west-southwest of Christchurch, the regional capital. Lake Tekapo is located at 44.0064°S, 170.4803°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a rural settlement.

Lake Tekapo lies cradled by a vast expanse of tussock-clad hills, their gentle slopes rising to meet a sky of an almost impossible, crystalline blue. It lies 75.4 km north-west of Timaru (from Timaru: bearing 305°T), and is situated 41.3 km north-east of Twizel. The air here carries a crisp, dry chill, even in the height of summer, a testament to its inland position far from any oceanic influence. The dominant feature, of course, is the lake itself, a jewel of startling turquoise that seems to absorb and amplify the light, its surface often rippled by a persistent breeze that whispers across the open country. To the west, the imposing, rugged silhouette of the Old Man Range forms a dramatic backdrop, its peaks often dusted with snow, a stark contrast to the softer contours of the surrounding landscape. The Tekapo River, a swift and clear artery, flows from the lake, its waters a vibrant blue-green, winding its way through the stony plains.

Historically, this high-country region has been shaped by the endeavours of sheep farming, the vast runs demanding a hardy breed of settler and animal alike. The local economy still retains a strong connection to agriculture, though a burgeoning tourism industry has become increasingly significant, drawn by the unparalleled stargazing opportunities afforded by the clear, dark skies and the stark, breathtaking beauty of the landscape. The iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, a humble stone structure with its simple wooden cross, stands sentinel on the lake's edge, a quiet monument to the early pioneers and a popular landmark for travellers. Nearby, Scott Pond, a smaller body of water, offers a different, more intimate reflection of the surrounding tussocklands, a quiet counterpoint to the grander sweep of Lake Tekapo.

About This Lake Tekapo Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Lake Tekapo, Canterbury, New Zealand at coordinates -44.00641, 170.48033. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Lake Tekapo.

Lake Tekapo sits within the Canterbury Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Lake Tekapo is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
