Irwell is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 21 m above sea level. It lies approximately 32 km south-west of Christchurch, the regional capital. Irwell is located at 43.7167°S, 172.3333°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Irwell rests in a landscape shaped by the broad sweep of the Canterbury Plains, its character defined by the proximity of Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora, a vast, shimmering expanse that dominates the horizon. It lies 15.4 km south-south-west of Rolleston (from Rolleston: bearing 195°T), and is situated 14.2 km west-south-west of Lincoln.
