Hunter is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 78 m above sea level. It lies approximately 175 km south-west of Christchurch, the regional capital. Hunter is located at 44.6167°S, 171.0500°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Hunter lies in a broad, fertile basin, where the land gently unfurls towards the distant, soft undulations of The Hunters Hills. It lies 29.3 km south-south-west of Timaru (from Timaru: bearing 213°T), and is situated 12.4 km north of Waimate. The sky here often stretches wide and pale, a canvas for the slow drift of clouds, and the air carries the scent of turned earth and dry grasses. Patches of native bush, like the Hook Bush to the east, offer pockets of deeper green against the prevailing gold and brown of the rolling farmland that characterises the immediate landscape.
