Goose Bay is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It sits at an elevation of around 9 m above sea level. It lies approximately 138 km north-northeast of Christchurch, the regional capital. Goose Bay is located at 42.4790°S, 173.5278°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Goose Bay lies where the land meets the sea, a curve of coast facing the open ocean. It lies 112.7 km south-south-west of Blenheim (from Blenheim: bearing 198°T), and is situated 14.5 km west-south-west of Kaikoura. The immediate landscape is a gentle lowering of the land, a soft transition from the rolling hills that back the settlement to the shingle beaches that meet the restless tide. The air here carries the sharp tang of salt and the damp scent of kelp, especially after a strong southerly. The Ote Makura River, a modest waterway, winds its way to the sea just a kilometre or so to the south, its banks fringed with hardy coastal vegetation.
