TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Glenavy.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Glenavy, Canterbury

Glenavy is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It is a small community with a population of 195. It sits at an elevation of around 28 m above sea level. It lies approximately 196 km south-west of Christchurch, the regional capital. Glenavy is located at 44.9167°S, 171.1000°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT).

Glenavy rests in a landscape shaped by the patient hand of geology, a place where the earth’s breath still whispers across wide, fertile plains. It lies 59.1 km south-south-west of Timaru (from Timaru: bearing 192°T), and is situated 22.5 km north-north-east of Oamaru. The land here is a patchwork of greens and golds, stitched together by the patient work of farmers and the meandering course of the Waitaki River, which flows a mere four kilometres away. Rolling hills, softened by distance and the ever-present Canterbury sky, rise and fall like slumbering giants towards the hazy outline of The Stony Ridge, nineteen kilometres to the east. The air, clean and carrying the scent of turned earth and ripening crops, feels vast and open, a stark contrast to the more enclosed landscapes found closer to the coast.

The pulse of Glenavy beats with the steady rhythm of its agricultural heart, a tradition stretching back through generations. Dairy herds graze contentedly on pastures that have been meticulously cultivated, their milk destined for markets near and far. While sheep and beef farming still holds its place, the land also yields to the subtle artistry of horticulture, with orchards hinting at future harvests. History is etched not in grand monuments but in the enduring spirit of the people who have worked this land, their lives interwoven with the seasons and the cycles of the soil. Nearby, Wai-iti Park offers a green sanctuary, a place where families gather and the quietude of nature provides a gentle counterpoint to the industry that defines this part of the Canterbury region.

About This Glenavy Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Glenavy, Canterbury, New Zealand at coordinates -44.91667, 171.1. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Glenavy.

Glenavy sits within the Canterbury Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Glenavy is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
