Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Fendalton, Canterbury

Fendalton is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It has a population of approximately 4,870. It sits at an elevation of around 13 m above sea level. It lies approximately 3 km north-west of Christchurch, the regional capital. Fendalton is located at 43.5167°S, 172.6000°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a small urban area.

Fendalton lies spread across the flat, fertile plains, where the air, though some ten kilometres from the open coastline, carries a faint, salty tang on the breeze, a whisper from McCormacks Bay. It lies 3.3 km north-west of Christchurch (from Christchurch: bearing 305°T), and is situated 7.9 km north-north-east of Halswell. Broad avenues, lined with mature plane trees whose leaves in autumn blaze with a transient, fiery beauty, carve logical lines through the landscape. To the north, the land gently rolls towards the distant, hazy silhouette of the Bald Hills, a constant, muted presence on the horizon. The Avon River/Otakaro, a ribbon of cool, dark water, meanders through the district, its banks often overhung with weeping willows, their branches trailing like verdant lace across the surface, reflecting the ever-changing sky above. The nearby Albert Lake, a tranquil sheet of water, often mirrors the surrounding sky, a placid counterpoint to the more dynamic flow of the river.

The history of Fendalton is deeply entwined with the agricultural aspirations of early Canterbury settlers, a place where the land was meticulously surveyed and divided for productive use. While much of the surrounding region is known for its dairy and sheep farming, Fendalton itself developed a character of established residences and dignified homes, a testament to its enduring appeal as a desirable locality. The proximity to educational institutions, notably the University of Canterbury, has imbued Fendalton with a lively, intellectual undercurrent, drawing students and scholars who contribute to its vibrant, if understated, cultural fabric. The local economy, while historically rooted in land use, has diversified, embracing professional services and commerce, yet the echoes of its pastoral beginnings are still discernible in the spacious gardens and the enduring presence of mature trees that seem to hold the memory of a different era.

About This Fendalton Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Fendalton, Canterbury, New Zealand at coordinates -43.51667, 172.6. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Fendalton.

Fendalton sits within the Canterbury Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Fendalton is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
