TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Cheviot.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Cheviot, Canterbury

Cheviot is a locality in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It is a small community with a population of 425. It sits at an elevation of around 58 m above sea level. It lies approximately 95 km north-northeast of Christchurch, the regional capital. Cheviot is located at 42.8167°S, 173.2667°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a rural settlement.

Cheviot rests in a gentle hollow, its landscape defined by the soft, rolling contours of farmland stretching towards the distant murmur of the sea. It lies 94.8 km north-north-east of Christchurch (from Christchurch: bearing 33°T), and is situated 57.7 km north-east of Amberley. Here, the land is a patchwork quilt of greens and golds, punctuated by the dark, sturdy shapes of shelter belts and the occasional cluster of farm buildings. The air carries a clean, crisp scent, a blend of sun-warmed earth and the faint, salty tang that drifts inland from Port Robinson, some seven kilometres away. The Jed River, a ribbon of silver, meanders through the lower-lying ground, its banks fringed with willows, while further afield, the stark, upward thrust of Jacobs Ladder hints at the ruggedness that lies beyond the cultivated fields.

The history of Cheviot is deeply entwined with the land and the hardy souls who first worked it. Once a vast sheep station, the area was opened up for smaller farming blocks in the early 20th century, a significant shift that shaped the local economy and the character of the settlement. Dairy herds now graze the fertile pastures, their rhythmic milking a familiar sound in the early mornings, while sheep still dot the higher country. The proximity to Port Robinson, though not a bustling harbour, offers a connection to the coastal trade and fishing traditions that have long been a part of the region's lifeblood. Travellers often find a quiet charm in Cheviot, a place where the pace of life feels attuned to the seasons, and the simple beauty of the surrounding countryside offers a welcome respite.

About This Cheviot Map Page

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas.
