TOPO MAPS — NEW. Click the green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map to open a second map with a Base map row offering three choices. OSM is the standard OpenStreetMap street map. Aerial shows LINZ aerial imagery, down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. The search box above the map finds any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Edgecumbe.

Click 📍 My position in that same panel to take a single GPS reading from your device. It marks where you are, shows your accuracy, and reports your position as an NZTM2000 grid reference as well as plain latitude and longitude. The NZTM grid reference is the format New Zealand search and rescue services work from, and there is a Copy position button so you can paste it straight into a text message. It takes one reading and stops, rather than tracking continuously, to conserve your battery. Note that map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS reading does not — your coordinates stay correct even in places where the map itself cannot load.

The blue 📍 My Location & Navigate button starts live turn-by-turn driving directions from wherever you are to any destination you enter, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing if you leave the route.

Map search is available for a limited number of queries per session to manage costs. Be specific — search precisely for best results.

About Edgecumbe, Bay of Plenty

Edgecumbe is a locality in the Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand. It has a population of approximately 1,900. It sits at an elevation of around 9 m above sea level. It lies approximately 14 km west of Whakatane, the regional capital. Edgecumbe is located at 37.9833°S, 176.8333°E. It observes New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT). Statistics New Zealand classifies the area as a small urban area.

Edgecumbe rests on a broad, fertile plain, a landscape shaped by the gentle meanders of the Rangitaiki River, which flows a mere two kilometres to the west. It lies 54.3 km east-north-east of Rotorua (from Rotorua: bearing 72°T), and is situated 13.6 km west-south-west of Whakatane. The land here is predominantly flat, a rich tapestry of emerald pastures and cultivated fields stretching towards the hazy horizon, where the subtle undulations of distant hills begin to rise. Towards the north-east, the Omataroa Forest offers a darker, more verdant counterpoint, its dense canopy a promise of shaded trails and the rustle of unseen life. The air, especially in the early mornings, carries a crisp, clean scent, touched by the damp earth and the distant breath of agricultural activity.

The history of Edgecumbe is intertwined with the development of the surrounding farmlands and the vital Rangitaiki River. Its economy has long been anchored in dairy farming, the rich volcanic soils of the plain proving exceptionally suited to the grazing of cattle, their contented lowing a familiar sound on the breeze. Forestry also plays a significant role, with the proximity of Omataroa Forest providing timber for local industries. The town itself retains a quiet, purposeful air, a place where neighbours recognise each other and the rhythm of the day is dictated by the seasons of agriculture and the steady flow of the river. Lake Otumahi, a tranquil presence just five kilometres away, offers a placid reflection of the wide sky, a quiet haven for both local wildlife and those seeking a moment of repose.

About This Edgecumbe Map Page

This page provides an embedded street and satellite map of Edgecumbe, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand at coordinates -37.98333, 176.83333. Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch views, the plus and minus buttons to zoom, and Fullscreen to fill the screen.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map with four things the embedded map cannot do. It searches OpenStreetMap for any New Zealand town, suburb or landmark by name. It offers LINZ topographic maps as a base layer — the official Topo250 and Topo50 sheets, switching scale automatically as you zoom, and the standard reference for tramping, hunting and back-country travel. It offers LINZ aerial imagery down to 5cm resolution in urban areas. And it can take a single GPS fix from your device and report your position as both an NZTM2000 grid reference and plain latitude and longitude — the grid reference being what New Zealand search and rescue services work from. Map tiles require mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the coordinates remain correct even where the map itself cannot load.

My Location & Navigate starts the vector-tile navigator: live turn-by-turn driving directions from your current position to any destination, with spoken guidance, lane hints and automatic re-routing.

Live weather conditions with current observations and a 7-day forecast are powered by Open-Meteo. Real-time New Zealand and world news feeds keep the page current, while an editorial description provides background on Edgecumbe.

Edgecumbe sits within the Bay of Plenty Region. Location data is drawn from the GeoNames geographical database and verified by coordinates, ensuring the correct Edgecumbe is identified even where the name is shared across multiple New Zealand localities.
